Originating from the Shiwan and western traditions, the art of pottery and ceramics flourished in Hong Kong as early as the 1960s. Supported by local educationalists and promoted by academic institutions, this art, above all others, has been growing very fast in Hong Kong. For the last forty years, this unique art form has never become old-fashioned yet constantly growing. Now at the start of the new millennium, the art's development is still ahead of its time. Many devoted ceramicists have set up their own studios. Apart from creating artworks, these artists also organise various promotional activities including workshops, talks, fairs and tea cafes, etc. The variety of these activities has brought it even closer to our everyday lives, establishing a new form of culture and art.

The Contemporary Ceramic Society (HK) was established in 1992 by seven renowned ceramicists - locally born potters Rosanna Li Wei-han, Wong Ping-kwong and Ma So-mui, Terence Lee Tze-leung and Jakie Leung Koon-ming who had studied ceramics overseas, and Jane Burrell and Katherine Mahoney who had temporarily stayed in Hong Kong as pilgrims. The group came together and enthusiastically launched the society, uniting the energy and talent of local artists to drive the development of pottery in Hong Kong. Now after fourteen years, membership has increased to twenty-seven, and the Society has become the ceramic art organisation most representative of Hong Kong. At the time of its formation, and despite their different backgrounds and artistic styles, the founders were all dedicated to ceramic creation and the mission of the Society. They organised a series of activities and exhibitions on pottery, providing an interactive platform for the sharing of creative experiences, while at the same time showcasing their creative outputs to the public and further promoting the development of pottery and ceramics in Hong Kong.

"Living with the Locale ¢w Exhibition by Members of the Contemporary Ceramic Society (HK)" is the largest exhibition of members' works following the "10th Anniversary Exhibition of the Contemporary Ceramic Society (HK)" in 2002. It is the final programme in the "Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme III", gathering together the recent works of twenty-two local potters. Styles vary a lot in this exhibition, fully demonstrating the sophisticated skills and creativity of the members. The exhibition will be held in Central and Tsuen Wan, and two public seminars will be conducted by experienced members of the Society regarding the fun, interest and education of pottery. In Tsuen Wan, an outdoor carnival is held for the public to do pottery together with the artists and appreciate the pottery techniques demonstrated by different potters.
