The Late Version of Shan Hai Jing
In this exhibition, I will show my representative works in recent years “The Late Version of Shan Hai Jing”. In this series of works, I utilize images of various weird creatures from Shan Hai Jing (Literally: The Classic of Mountains and Seas) as my inspirations. Though these creatures are strange in their images, it may be no surprising us as development of genetic modification or biotechnology allows organisms in various forms appear in our world nowadays. However, it is hard to judge whether our ancestor prophesized such condition or we get our inspirations from them and create these strange animals. Nonetheless, the descriptions in Shan Hai Jing are a reflection of our ancestors’ reactions to environmental awareness. Those weird creatures appearing in Shan Hai Jing seem to have an eternal mesmerizing power, perhaps this has something to do with the so-called collective consciousness or déjà vu.
Many of my works tend to underline the attributes of the objects themselves. I make use of ordinary objects around us as dominant medium to produce material analogy of contemporary issues relevant to consumerism and environmental awareness, so as to arouse people’s attention.
