Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme IV: Imagine ─ Sculptures by Johnson Tsang
Exhibition Introduction | Introduction of Artist | Artist's Statement | Artworks | Videos | Exhibition Photos | Invitation Card

A self-taught ceramicist, Johnson specialises in ceramic sculpturing. In 1996, he set up his own ceramics workshop, and started to hold ceramic art activities with various organisations, aiming at bringing joy to different communities through pottery.

Johnson's works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imagination, integrating the two elements, "human beings" and "objects", into creative themes. He hopes to induce viewers to rethink the relationship between human beings and all objects in the world through the use of intriguing visual elements, so as to convey the message of caring for Nature and the attitude to live in harmony and integration with the world. One of the exhibits, "Humanosaur", reflects the artist's thought towards the consequence of war. The Humanosaur was the evolutionary descendant of warmongering human beings and was a hybrid of warriors and weapons. Similar to dinosaurs, humanosaurs were the most powerful governors of the earth. However, they were finally devastated by the destructive power of wars, and became extinct, just as the dinosaurs did.

To coincide with the exhibition, Johnson initiated a community ceramic project, "Hand in Hand with Clay" in order to convey the core concept of his creation of works for this solo exhibition. In the project, po ttery workshops were organised by Johnson for various schools, charitable and rehabilitation organisations during February to October 2008. A number of adorable clay figures were created by participants with various levels of ability, in which their wishes were expressed - it is hoped that audience can admire the fruitful works in an atmosphere without distinction. These figures will be displayed in the exhibition at Hong Kong Central Library.
