Hong Kong Visual Arts Society

Set up in 1974 by art and design students in the 60s at the Extra-Mural Department of The University of Hong Kong, HKVAS has organised many exhibitions and art activities to promote visual arts in Hong Kong. It is also one of the most energetic local art groups with long history since the 20th century. Most of the members are renowned local visual artists while their artwork media range from Chinese and western painting, photography, sculpture, ceramics to installation art. Former chairmen of the Society include Gaylord Chan, Aser But, Chu Hing-wah, Eddie Lui, Lui Chun-kwong, Mok Yat-san, etc. and now the Society is under the chairmanship of Danny Lee.

To celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2008, the Society will demonstrate an innovative exhibition theme by grouping art works into three eras of the 70s, 80s and 90s, and inviting artists active in other decades to take part in the exhibition, to create a wide-ranging retrospective of the local art scene.

Hanison Lau

Having got his Bachelor Degree in Art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Hanison is now pursuing his Master Degree at the same institution. Since 2003, Hanison has been actively participating in various local joint exhibitions. In 2006, he held 2 solo exhibitions in Hong Kong, namely "Order' and "Poem‧Imagine". Hanison loves to create his works of installation with ready-made objects. He also has a keen interest in history and literature. Recently, Hanison selected 12 pieces of his favourite Chinese poem in Tang and Song Dynasties as his inspiration for a sculpture and painting series, imaginatively interpreting the conceptual space from words into physical installation.

Johnson Tsang

A self-taught ceramicist, Johnson specialises in ceramic sculpturing. In 1996, he set up his own ceramics workshop, and started to hold ceramic art activities with various organisations, aiming at bringing joy to different communities through clay making. Since 1993 he has taken part in a number of local and overseas joint exhibitions, and has held solo exhibitions in Hong Kong. He won the first prize in 2001 Philippe Charriol Foundation Art Competition. He was the winner of the Teaware by Hong Kong Potters competition in 2001 and 2005 respectively, and praised with the Outstanding Workmanship Award in the same competition in 2007. His works were cited in the Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition (2005), The First Taiwan Ceramics Biennale (2004), The 3rd World Ceramic Biennale 2005 Korea International Competition (2005), VIII Bienal Internacional de Cerámica, Manises, Spain (2007), and The City of Carouge Prize 2007 International Ceramics Competition, Switzerland.

Johnson's works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques accompanied by surrealist imagination, integrating the two elements, "human beings" and "objects", into creative themes. He hopes to induce viewers to rethink the relationship between human beings and all objects in the world through the use of intriguing visual elements, so as to convey the message of caring for nature and the world as well as harmony and integration.

Lumenvisum

Set up by four veteran photographers in 2007, Lumenvisum is a group for promoting photography, training, interaction with others, and as a collective resource. It aims to allow more people to undertake and learn about photography, so that they can effectively record and express personal experiences, thoughts and feelings with images.

In 2007, Lumenvisum acquired sponsorship from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council for its photo research project, "Dang Jia". Featuring a series of workshops, exchange meetings and a final exhibition, the programme allowed some Hong Kong people from all walks of life to express their thoughts about the 10 years of Hong Kong's reunion with China through the medium of photography, and facilitated public discussions on the topic of "Hong Kong is my home; we are our own masters."

Lam Wai-kit

Lam graduated with a Bachelor Degree (Hons) in Fine Art from the Goldsmiths College, University of London in 1996. In 2003, she received her Master of Fine Arts Degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. From 1996, Lam has been actively participating in many local and overseas exhibitions in Italy, China and America; and also solo photography and video exhibitions in Hong Kong, Canada and UK. Some of the examples are "The Displacement" (2002); "The Other" (2004) and the series of "The Divided Minds" (2007). Her works were selected for the Philippe Charriol Foundation Modern Arts Competition, Hong Kong; Contemporary Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibition 1998 and The 8th Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards.

Lam's works include video, photography and text. Through the effects of overlapping and juxtaposition of images, she creates an atmosphere that is in-between reality and illusion. She believes human beings and nature are of the same origin. However, the material world obscures the commonness between the nature and human beings that it is hard to tell their relationship anymore. So, she would like to exhibit a series of photography and video to investigate the conflict and compatibility between them that we can rethink the importance of the space where we are living.
